Pet Responsibility

Pet Ownership Comes With Responsibilities
In the wake of recent events, we’d like to re-emphasize some of the actions involved in being a responsible pet owner. Within the City, pet owners should:
- Abide by leash laws (dogs). With very few exceptions dogs are required to be on leashes when in public areas. Examples of exceptions include the following: when at dog parks or at sanctioned obedience sessions. Note: City ordinances prohibit dogs and cats from running at-large.
- Abide by animal vaccination & registration laws (dogs & cats). Dogs and cats kept in the City of St. Louis are required to be vaccinated and registered. City ordinance also limits the number of pets that you can have in a single-family dwelling within the City.
- Do not CHAIN your dogs outside. The use of heavy chains to restrict movement of dogs is abusive and is harmful to the animals.
- Clean up their dog’s waste. Removal of dog feces is required by law. Fines in St. Louis can be as much as $500 for violating this ordinance.
- Control noise. Owners should make sure their pets don’t disturb the peace by barking or howling at inappropriate times. It is a courtesy every neighbor expects.
- Microchip their pets (dogs & cats). These identification devices help to increase reunions between owners and lost pets. They also reduce the chances of pets becoming strays.
- Make sure their pets get regular exercise (dogs & cats). Just like humans, pets need exercise to stay healthy. Choose indoor or outdoor activities as appropriate, and ensure your pet gets 30-60 minutes of exercise daily.
- Train their pets to obey. Behavioral problems are the number one reason why pets are turned over to shelters. A well-trained pet will bring much joy to its owner, and is less likely to be a nuisance or danger to others.
- Properly care for outside pets. Outside pets require sufficient food, clean water and shelter from the elements. Be careful about how long food is left out as it may attract mice, rats, or opossums. Outside pets should be properly restrained with a leash or fence as appropriate.
- Maintain proper homeowner’s insurance. Each pet owner is liable for any damage or injury caused by their pet. Please ensure your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance provides the proper coverage.
In the City of St. Louis, we are a community, and it is important that we are respectful of each other. We encourage all pet owners to do their part and be responsible.
