Follow us on our journey as we look back on black films and television shows with great soundtracks and musical moments.
In honor of James Avery, who’s birthday was at the end of November (11/27), we’re taking a look back at some of the biggest musical moments from his monumental show, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
First things first rest in peace Uncle Phil… For real… – J. Cole “No Role Modelz”
In 1990 we were introduced to Banks family, which included Nicky, Ashley, Hilary, Carlton, Vivian, Philip “Uncle Phil,” Jeffery and Will the “Fresh Prince.” From the opening credits generations fell in love with the witty, lovable family, and some would say they still hold a special place in our hearts. But how could we ever forget a show that has a theme song as good as the one Will Smith created for The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (posted below).
Will Smith’s – “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Theme Song”
Another great musical moment from the Fresh Prince was when Will lip-synched this Jennifer Holiday classic to Uncle Phil.
Carlton: Carlton had some great musical moments on the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. I think many of us wish we had a signature dance like Carlton that could fit any genre of music and lets not forget how great his vocals were. Check out some of his best musical moments with clips below:
This clip features Carlton and the rest of the family dancing on the iconic show Soul Train, the clip even has the dearly departed Don Corneilus in it.
True fans of the show know Tom Jones and Carlton finally singing together was one the biggest musical moments on the show.
Ashley: In the later seasons of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air the show showcased the fact that Ashley Banks, played by Tatyana Ali, could actually sing but it was this episode during the early years of the Fresh Prince that still has people doing a double take.
Yep that’s Tevin Campbell singing “Happy Birthday” to Ashley.
With the clip above we get a double dose of Ashley Banks singing the late Aretha Franklin’s hit R.E.S.P.E.C.T. as well as a song titled Make Up Your Mind.
Boyz II Men: The episode where Will delivered Boyz II Men to Nicky’s Christening is considered to be the best musical moment of the entire series. After all that’s how little Nicky became “Nicholas Michael Shawn Nathan Wanya Banks.” Check out Boyz II Men signing”Let It Snow” below.
Here is Boyz II Men singing “Silent Night” at Nicky’s christening.
Bonus Clip:
Who remembers when Bell Biv DeVoe shot a video in the Bank’s family living room, while Aunt Viv and Uncle Phil were away??? Yeah me neither… Enjoy this clip from season 2 of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
